Fondation Néotropique

Mètre par mètre pour sauver la planète

We are a non-profit civil organization dedicated to rain forest conservation through community actions, research and education. We are based in Colombia, at the heart of the Coffee Region.

Our country has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world. Around 3.5 million of hectares are lost each year with devastating effects over biodiversity, water sources, clean air, and natural landscapes beauty. Tropical forest are key elements to our life’s sustainability on Earth, not only as humans in Colombia, but also impacting distant geographic areas and diverse species, ranging from microscopic forms of life to animals and plants.

Biodiversity preservation is considered a core target to ensure our survival on Earth.  This why the Neotropic Foundation has created the program “Adopt a square meter of rainforest” to invite all people around the world, companies, and organizations to join us in the task of caring for our forests.

By adopting a square meter of forest, you can contribute in a real way to the conservation and recovery of diverse forest areas in Colombia: rain forest on the Andes Mountains, the Colombian Amazon, and pacific coast forest located on Chocó region. These areas are biodiversity hot spots, with great biological and cultural importance on a planetary level.

Adopt a square meter of rainforest for a dollar

By adopting a square meter of forest, the Neotropic Foundation gives you:

  • Your donation certificate with the exact coordinates of your square meter, visible by Google Earth
  • Access to available information in the area that you are helping to protect
  • You can visit the area whenever you want (depending on the load capacity of the place)

You are adopting a square meter of forest, and with it, you are acting as Guardian of the Planet

  • You are helping to conserve biodiversity
  • You are supporting the communities that live near the conservation territory
  • You support the local generation of employment thanks to the creation of Local Forest Rangers

Our pillars of action

Educate

We promote general public interest on science and why it is a powerful tool to help us in the environment conservation, from primary and secondary school students to adults.  Educational activities are very useful to induce changes in our habitudes and daily routines, arising consciousness on automatic behaviors that we humans learn by mirroring other humans, but should be reconsidered under a more environment respectful perspective.

Through educational programs and activities, we help to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote individual’s and collective active commitments towards the protection of biodiversity.

Investigate

Through scientific research projects, we generate essential knowledge to monitor changes in the health status of forests, identify possible threats and contribute with more effective strategies for their conservation.

Influence

We promote solutions to mitigate the threats to forests. We provide essential scientific information to implement actions for their protection. We promote the creation of Natural Reserves of Civil Society through the adoption of vast amounts of lands located on critical biodiversity hot spots that could be menaced of deforestation, massive monoculture or
illegal and massive mining.

Adopt a meter of Rainforest:

It is the real way to contribute to the conservation and recovery of forest areas in Colombia on the Andes Mountains, the Colombian Amazon, and pacific coast over Chocó region. These are great biological and cultural hot spots, locally and at a worldwide level. Our  Foundation carries out multiple projects and activities to improve the use of resources promoting teamwork hand in hand with local communities and their inhabitants.

What is the importance of conserving?

Forests serve as mitigating factors for strong solar radiation and are key elements in mitigating climate change due to their role as carbon sinks; they also constitute a basis for socio-economic development, especially in the case of hydrological services. Our forests do invaluable things for us: they produce oxygen, store carbon dioxide, are water reserves, protect us from floods, prevent erosion. Despite their crucial role, the growing pressure exerted by society and the agro-industrial sector are turning them into vulnerable ecosystems; this is the reason why anyone can contribute to mitigate this trend and contribute to the conservation of Biodiversity and Tropical Forests by supporting our Program: “Adopt a square meter of tropical forest”.

What is “Adopt a Square Meter of Tropical Forest?”

It is the possibility offered by the Neotropic Foundation to general public with the aim to contribute in a real way to the conservation and recovery of forest areas in the Tropical Andes. Anyone can adopt one (1) square meter for just one Dollar or Euro (1U$ – €1). It is a one-time payment. You can adopt from one meter to the number of square meters you want.

Adopt a forest for someone else …

“In loving memory”: Prolonging life and preserving the environment, is giving an absent loved one not only a tree but an entire forest. Give a square meter and the life that lives in it will perpetuate the memory of your loved one.

An unconventional and meaningful gift:  Every year and on special occasions, we are used to fill our loved ones with conventional, traditional, expensive gifts that do not bring true meaning or caring messages. “Adopt a Forest” campaign will not only be a worthwhile gift, but it will also contribute to the conservation and environmental protection. You will be giving more life and future than a conventional gift can.

A sustainable commitment to your work team: If you really want to forge habits of responsibility and environmental awareness in your team of collaborators and clients, avoid giving traditional gifts (which unfortunately in some cases end up in the trash) and adopt a forest in their name. The gratification of committing yourself to the well-being of planet earth is priceless.

Amazon

Square meter of biosphere = U$1

The biosphere is made up of the parts of Earth where life exists. The biosphere extends from the deepest root systems of trees to the dark environment of ocean trenches, to lush rain forests and high mountaintops.

Colombian Andes

The Andean region is one of the six natural regions of Colombia. It is located in the center of the country, bordering the Caribbean region to the north, Venezuela to the northeast, the Orinoquía to the east, the Amazon to the southeast, Ecuador to the south and the Pacific region to the west.

Amazon

This Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical forest in the world. It is considered that its extension reaches 7,000,000 km². The Amazon stands out for being one of the ecoregions with the greatest biodiversity on the planet. In addition, the Amazon supports the regulation of the carbon cycle and climate change.

On November 11, 2011, the Amazon rainforest was declared one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Chocó biogeographical

The climate of Chocó Biogeografico is one of the rainiest in the world. The high rainfall, the tropical condition and its isolation (separation of the Amazon basin by the Andes Mountains) have contributed to make the Chocó biogeographic region one of the most diverse on the planet since its diversity is very great: 9000 species vascular plants, 200 mammals, 600 birds, 100 reptiles, 120 amphibians. There is a high level of endemism: approximately 25% of plant and animal species
